How to Ease Tension With Swedish Massage

How to Ease Tension With Swedish Massage

One of the best methods to relaxation is a Swedish massage which puts you in a restful, relaxed mode. It's one of the best ways to ease tension throughout your entire body.

1

Determine what type of Swedish massage you want: relaxation massage, remedial massage or
sports
massage. Also think about the areas you want massaged and which should be avoided and the amount of pressure that you can comfortably tolerate.

2

Find a qualified massage therapist. You can start at a website like The Health Professionals Directory, which will put you in touch with local massage therapists. Your local phone directory can also lead you to local therapists. Check to see if they are certified and which types of massage they use.

3

Schedule an appointment with a therapist that will best meet your needs.

4

Watch for the various massage strokes. Effleurage is a gliding stroke. Petrissage is like kneading of bread. When Friction is the choice of stroke, the hands move with circular pressure. There are also three other strokes: Vibration, Percussion or tapping and hacking, and Passive and Active movement of the body.

5

Lay on the table either unclothed or partially clothed with a drape, which is a sheet covering part of you. Relax as the massage therapist lights candles, uses scented oils for therapy or has background music playing to aid in your relaxation.

6

Relax. A few clients get so relaxed that when they're laying on their stomach, they drool. It's a normal reaction and there's usually a clean cloth under your head because of this. If you've hit the drooling stage, it's safe to say you're probably without any tension.

7

Leave the therapist with a new refreshed you. The stimulation to the muscles releases toxins and increases oxygen, giving you a whole new lease on life.

Tips & Warnings

Tell the massage therapist about any medical history or current physical condition.
